Hoboken gives a whole new meaning to dining alfresco. You are actually dining in the streets in Hoboken, NJ.
NYC and the surrounding areas consist of a lot of buildings with small spaces. Restaurants typically have limited tables. Because of this, when the restaurants opened back up in June of 2020 (during the pandemic), they wanted to entice customers to return. So, like every other restaurant and bar in the country, they needed outdoor space. They were allowed to create sidewalk cafe areas or even re-purpose street parking spots to build outdoor 'Streaterys'
The Rats
Ok, yes we are in the NYC area and rats are almost as common as dogs. When the establishments started building these structures out in the streets. Not only was it reducing the limited parking that was available but it was creating another problem. Most of the places built a structure that was raised. The problem with these structures was the cracks in between each slab. You drop crumbs of food on the ground and they end up in these cracks, creating the perfect haven for rats to snack. It did not take too long before guests complained of 'rat sightings'
I am glad I was not here for that issue. I believe it has been handled. There were no rat sightings while we were there. Thank Goodness!
The Most Important Meal of the Day!
You all know how much I love my breakfast. I could eat it in the morning or even for dinner. I can not function for the day without a solid breakfast and a really good cup of coffee. I also love a weekend brunch. This is funny, because I will not eat something that is considered a lunch item, for breakfast LOL. So why brunch, you may ask? Well, most of the time restaurants add a delicious breakfast creation onto their brunch menu, that is not available on the standard breakfast menu. Hence, why I love brunch! Plus, it just sounds better and also sounds more acceptable for drinking a mimosa!
When I visit Dave in Weehawken, we typically walk over to Hoboken for most things, food, coffee, bagels, and most importantly coffee.
Anthony Davids for Brunch
This restaurant is tucked out of the way and not on Washington, the main drag of Hoboken. We happened to be driving into Jersey City area for something and this restaurant was packed at lunchtime. My rule of thumb in most places is if the restaurant is busy with locals, then it is worth checking out!
They also offer their brunch menu every day! Score!
I am also a true snob when it comes to coffee. I know what I like, and have had excellent coffee. It is important enough to me that I will not settle for coffee that is poorly roasted or made from low-grade beans. I really enjoyed their coffee while dining here. It was not bitter tasting at all. I enjoy enough cream in my coffee to make it a caramel-type color.
Not because I want to smooth any of the taste out, but I enjoy the creamy consistency of the coffee.
If coffee is done really well, it should NOT be bitter. Acidity is not bitterness. Acidity is a taste preference, but not a bad thing.
The french toast was really, really good. Not overly sweet. Just the right amount of sweetness and flavors. Crispy on the edges and the inside of the toast was soft. Plus, it is really quiet right there and the sun is not beating down on you. So you can sit outside without being in the middle of traffic.
Just a few samples of the streatery set up down Washington Avenue.
Dinner on Washington Avenue
I love a good progressive dinner or sampling my way through a couple of different spots. You know, Apps & cocktails at wine spot and then dinner at another. It is my favorite thing to do while traveling, because it allows you to try multiple places.
Dave and I also like to order a few things and split them. This way if we do not like one item, our entire meal is not a fail. LOL
Here are our favorite things from our outdoor dining in Hoboken.
We did not actually dine outdoors here, but we sat right by the window with a great view for people watching and the Spanish wine we had was DELICIOUS! It paired well with our carrots and risotto dish that had a little bit of a kick. We stopped here before dinner to grab a drink and a snack as we were not having dinner until later that evening and this girl has to eat!
The vibe here was different. Very trendy and relaxed. Everything we ate was excellent. Light wooded structure gave it a more casual vibe. I really enjoyed it. I loved the cheese board, Dave loves tuna tartare.
Although I love my cabernets, when I am dining outside in the summer or having fish or a lighter dish I love a really good Sauvignon Blanc. I was very pleased with this wine. We met Dave's kids for dinner and had a really nice night!

Before we headed to Bin14, we stopped for a quick snack and glass of wine at Lolas. I love a good tapas bar. It is a great way to sample lots of different dishes. When I dine, I am a mix between comfort and new. When I find a favorite dish or places I will continually go back and order my favorites and then also try something new. Tapas restaurants give you the perfect place to sample and find your favorites for next time. It was not my favorite outdoor dining setting. You are right on Washington. It is kinda fun and different in that instead of people watching you are car watching. You do not get this in Ohio. LOL. Bin 14 was on the main drag so I enjoyed the set up better than Lolas. It was just formal and not as cute. Nothing bad, just not my personal taste. BUT the FOOD was delicious! I inhaled down both the mozzarella and tomato dish as well as the mushroom one. The food was excellent!!
Puppy Cocktails
Even the dogs can eat on the sidewalk. This is a shaded water bowl station for the dogs of Hoboken. Everywhere you walk in Hoboken, you see dogs walking their owners. It is adorable and there were many dog petting opportunities if you are an animal lover.
Check out my TikTok page for the cutest video ever of the dogs I met while in Hoboken.

I highly recommend you stop in Hoboken if you are visiting NYC. You can easily get there from one of the ferry boats. Check this site for schedules and locations. The boat drops you off right in Hoboken and these restaurants are only a couple of blocks walk from the boat. The cost of the ferry ride is only $9/way.

If you dine in Hoboken and then take the boat back to Manhattan at night, the city view at night with the lights is magical! You get a completely different perspective!
Let me know your favorite spot to dine. Leave it in the comments below.
Cheers,
Lisa
